What do you do when faced with disheartening loss and disappointment over and over? How is a human being supposed to ride the roller coaster of emotionally bright highs and depressingly dark lows? Koa Siu’s relationship with Christ has been a steady brace in life’s turmoil as seen in his worshipful reaction to God and love of all people.

Koa was born and raised in Hawaii— graduated from Aiea High School, attended Hillsdale College in Michigan, and then graduated from Pacific Rim Bible College in Honolulu.  In 1998, Koa began to define his own musical style with the release of Thirsty Life.  From 1999-2008 Koa could be found in Waikiki’s most prestigious hotels as a solo act, or singing Hawaiian music with his dad Leon.  As part of New Hope Christian Fellowship with Pastor Wayne Cordeiro, Koa served as the Worship Pastor at New Hope Hawaii Kai Church from 2003-2007.  In April of 2007 Koa released his long-awaited second album Where You Are which won “Rock Album Of The Year” in the 2008 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts).  In October 2007, Koa released a Christian worship-music album entitled, I Am Yours—A Worship Experience with KOA.  On his recent Hawaiian islands tour, Koa visited 17 churches on 3 islands to bring his special brand of worship to over 17,000 people.  I Am Yours also received a 2008 Hoku Award nomination for “Religious Album of the Year”.  In January of 2008, the Siu family re-located to Sydney, Australia to become part of Hillsong Church and attend Hillsong Leadership College. He is presently the worship leader for Hope Chapel West Oahu and lead musician and vocalist in the newly released worship CD, Now Is The Time.

Her height and ability in athletics is a reflection of her attention to details resulting in academic and athletic achievements. Such successes are an extension of her inner life, her life of faith. She is with us to share the difference her faith in Christ has made and how it has affected others.

Biography: Rebecca Dew is a Junior at the University of Hawaii. She is the center for the UH Women’s basketball team. She was named all-WAC academic two years in a row and has had a stellar collegiate career. A 2008 graduate of Family Christian Academy in Madison, Tennessee she helped her team win the 2006 New Zealand Nationals. Rebecca was her high school class valedictorian, received Chancellor’s Scholarship and two academic awards from Every Nation Leadership Institute. She has extensive international experience in basketball playing throughout Asia.

Dr. Jeff Miyazawa maintains a private practice emphasizing contemporary restorative and cosmetic dentistry in Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii. He is a graduate of Iolani School, Creighton University and the world renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI). In July 2003, Dr. Miyazawa was appointed by the Governor of the State of Hawaii to the State Board of Dental Examiners. In 2006, he assumed the role of Chairman of the Board. Aside from his dental activities, Dr. Miyazawa has been involved in church ministries and combined his God given gift of providing dental care with his passion for evangelism, sharing on short-term mission trips with the people of the Dominican Republic, Thailand, and Brazil. He is director of Paradise Global Mission Brazil (Fortaleza) & Paradise Global Mission Dominican Republic (El Catay). Dr. Miyazawa and his wife Joanie, have two sons: Jonah & Joshua, and two daughters: Joy & Jaclyn. During his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, and coaching high school baseball and youth baseball and football.

Stephen Grellet once said, “I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. For I shall not pass this way again.” Our guest lives in the moment. He seems to extract the “marrow out of life” and much of what he does is give. He’s one of the most generous men around. He is blessed by the Lord and he’s a conduit of God’s blessings.

Today we have real estate specialists as our guests. But, we are here primarily to talk about relationships and sports and maybe, a little about real estate. Namely, marriage relationships; how it relates to conflict, pain, disappointment, communication and miscommunication. Some people have a way of saying things that are worth repeating. Zig Ziglar stated, “I have no way of knowing whether or not you married the wrong person, but I do know that many people have a lot of wrong ideas about marriage and what it takes to make that marriage happy and successful. I’ll be the first to admit that it’s possible that you did marry the wrong person. However, if you treat the wrong person like the right person, you could well end up having married the right person after all. On the other hand, if you marry the right person, and treat that person wrong, you certainly will have ended up marrying the wrong person. I also know that it is far more important to be the right kind of person than it is to marry the right person. In short, whether you married the right or wrong person is primarily up to you.”

Anthony Holyfield

Anthony Holyfield first made his mark in Hawaii as one of the stars of UH Football under coach Dick Tomey. His exploits as an athlete were so pronounced that he made it to the NFL and played for the San Francisco 49ers. His life was on the fast track of success when he encountered one set-back, which led to other set-backs. He tells how with Christ’s help, those set-backs have been turned into come-backs. So much so, it has positively impacted his future, his family and all the people who know him. He ministers at Grace Bible Church, is a coach, professional musician and artist. He is married to Nobuko (basketball player) and has three sons Anthony (Roosevelt/APU), Lucion (UH Lab/UH), Marcus (Mid-Pac/SMU).

Edwin Louis Cole once said, “Have faith in God; God has faith in you.” Every one of us, at some time in our lives, need someone who believes in us. Someone like a parent, or coach, or mentor and friend, who can express the good things and the possibilities they see in us. Thank God for those people. Thank God, also, that he has given certain individuals a very expansive capacity to do that for many people. Anthony Holyfield is one of those “Life Expanders.” He has been an encouragement to me and I know he will be an encouragement to you, too.

Fulfilling God’s Call in the Chapters of Life
Vince Roberts

Vince Roberts grew up in a Navy family and graduated from Grace Bible Christian School in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended the University of Hawaii before completing his degree. Vince joined the United States Navy Reserves in high school and followed his father by doing the same work he did in the Navy (photography and maps). He retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves after 21 years as a Lieutenant Commander and resigned from his civil service job, also after 21 years. Vince now lives in Vietnam with his family. He teaches and works with university students in strategic ways to improve the quality of life for those who live there. He is a coffee connoisseur and enjoys playing basketball. He is married to Trina and they have five children: Trevor (16), Justus (14), Daisy (11), Miles (9) and Riley (5).

If your life were a book, what would the title be? If your life were a book what would you want the title to be? If your life were a book what do you think God would want that title to be? “Wow, that’s a lot all at once,” you say. More than that, what chapter would this season of your life be titled? The reason I ask is because so many of us live at such a rapid pace, we rarely have a chance to assess where we actually are and where God has us. Have you ever caught yourself stealing from the wonder of the moment (the gift God has given) by regretfully thinking of the past mishaps or worrying too much about the future? If you have, you are not alone. I have, too. Our guest today, seems to have a much clearer view of life than others, and it will benefit all of us to hear his story.
