The University of Hawaii linguistics department conducted social linguistic studies that show that there are approximately 200,000 speakers of Hawaii Pidgin in Hawaii that can’t function well in the Standard English speaking world professionally and socially – a population of speakers probably are not being reached effectively in Standard English. Since 2000 Da Jesus Book has sold 91,000 copies. Pastor Earl Morihara is the lead translator for the The Hawaii Pidgin Bible Translation Project – that began in 1986 when Dr. Joe and Barbara Grimes came to Hawaii as a visiting professor from Cornell and Wycliffe Bible Translators.
Earl Morihara joined the pastoral staff of NHCO in 2001 after teaching English as a Second Language for many years in Hawaii. He also was a Missionary/English Teacher in Japan and taught English at Mililani High School. Earl has an M.A in Christian Ministry from Pacific Rim Christian University and an M.A in English as a Second Language at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Earl also serves as a co-translator of Da Good and Specho Book, the Hawaii Pidgin Bible. As Campus Pastor, he oversees Ohana Groups (small groups), First Impressions (Greeters & Connections) and Sports Ministries. He is married to his high school sweetheart and is a father of two college-aged children.
