There are few gentle giants in the world. Guy Kapeliela is one of them. Humble, humorous and real, he captivates people when he speaks. His love for God and compassion for the lost puts people at ease instantly. We need more people like him in our world – that’s why I believe you’ll be comforted, strengthened, encouraged and inspired by his story of God’s grace.
Pastor Guy Kapeliela is married to Claudine and the father of three fabulous children (Mehana, Keanu, Kealakai), many are amazed at what the Lord has done in his life. Born and raised in Kailua, Pastor Guy found himself looking for meaning in his life. He turned to drugs, alcohol and violence which nearly destroyed him. In 1985, while attending college in Fresno, California, Pastor Guy accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Through God’s grace, the bondage of substance abuse was broken and Pastor Guy’s life was restored. His journey with Christ has led to planting and pastoring churches: Hope Chapel Olomana (13 years) and Hope Chapel Second City (since 2011).
During a mission trip to Tonga, God gave Pastor Guy a vision that he would plant a church in his hometown of Kailua and it would minister to the surrounding communities. In 1999, God’s prophesy was fulfilled when Pastor Guy opened the doors to Hope Chapel Olomana.
In February of 2008, Pastor Guy moved into Hawaiian Homelands in Kapolei and felt a pressing on his heart to minister in his new home town. It wasn’t until August of 2011 that he finally decided to follow the calling that God had placed on his life. Leaving the comforts of Olomana and all that he built over the last 13 years, he and Claudine decided to take a leap of faith and start an extension service of Hope Chapel Olomana in Kapolei.
Hope Chapel Second City was birthed in Pastor Guy’s backyard with 40 people on August 7, 2011. Within a few months the church out grew Pastor Guy’s backyard and moved into a 40 by 60 tent. Within 2 months, Hope Chapel Second City outgrew the tent and began hold their services at the Kapolei High School gymnasium. But God wasn’t done yet. After little over a year at Kapolei High School, God open another page and now Hope Chapel Second City meets on any given Sunday at the new University Of Hawaii West Oahu campus where nearly 300 people call Second City their home.
Ezekiel 36:26 “And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.”
