
Malen was born and raised in Manila, Philippines and became a Christian as a teenager after reading a gospel track and joined a church her sister attended. She became a campus minister in India, Thailand, and Cambodia. She helped led and underground church in a communist country in Asia where she met her husband, Joshua.
Joshua was born and raised on the Waianae Coast and attended Iolani for High school. He became involved in campus ministry at the University of Hawaii. He met Malen during missions trips to Asia. Joshua was on his way to a mission trip in Africa with JCCY when he stopped in Asia for his first and only date with Malen. They now live in Hawaii with two girls, Hosanna and Hanna, and one on the way. Malen substitute teaches part time and Joshua works as a Psychiatrist for the US government.
